Martin Mlynár saw the rise and fall of the tech bubble first hand, so don’t expect a glowing reputation to dazzle him. The Corestone founder tells Citywire’s Atholl Simpson why complacency will be investors’ downfall and why he demands unconditional transparency.
A company’s reputation exerts a powerful influence over investors but for Martin Mlynár of Corestone Investment Managers, fund selection is not about picking the most highly polished exterior – it’s what’s inside that counts.

Mlynár, who runs more than $17 billion in assets on behalf of a number of institutional clients, believes reputation carries too much weight within his industry.

‘There are too many selectors who go into a beautiful office, establish there is a name on the building, that a lot of people work there and everybody has a chair and a computer, but very often they do not connect the dots with what these people are doing,’ he says.

‘So what we are trying to do is verify what is actually happening.’

As CEO of the multi-manager firm, the Switzerland-based institutional selector says this kind of attention to detail is an essential attribute in his profession.
